The GST Road was chock-a-block with traffic at Perungalathur on Sunday evening as those who had travelled to their native place for Pongal holidays started returning to the city.

While the Tambaram Police Commissionerate had deployed personnel to regulate traffic, and announced measures to divert heavy vehicles through Oragadam, several vehicles were moving bumper to bumper from Perungalathur to Tambaram.

Vehicles queued up for over a kilometre for an hour. T. Murugesan, who was returning home to Adyar from Vandavasi with his family, said there was heavy traffic at Maduranthakam, Chengalpattu and Perungalathur bridge, resulting in his travel time extending by two hours.

Similarly, road-users faced difficulties at the Paranur toll gate in Chengalpattu on Saturday and Sunday with vehicles queuing up at all the counters for at least a kilometre.

A senior police official from Chengalpattu district said arrangements were made to divert vehicles via Singaperumal Koil junction towards Thiruporur on Rajiv Gandhi Salai to ease traffic congestion.

A senior official of the National Highways Authority of India said boom barriers were non-operational at Paranur and Vikravandi toll plazas to facilitate free movement of traffic, and save time for road-users.

The Southern Railway has announced special suburban train services from Kattankulathur to Tambaram from 4 a.m. to 6.20 a.m. on Monday.
