The byelections to the five vacant Gram Panchayats seats in Chamarajanagar district scheduled to be held on May 11 have been postponed by 15 days.

The State Election Commission had announced the calendar of events for elections to the Singanapura seat in Kempanapura Gram Panchayat, Kodagapura seat in Somahalli Gram Panchayat, T. Hosur seat in Gowdahalli Gram Panchayat, Attikhane seat in P.G. Palya Gram Panchayat and Gorasane seat in Malai Mahadeshwara (MM) Hills Gram Panchayat.

Deputy Commissioner of Chamarajanagar Shilpa Nag said the seats in the five GP had fallen vacant due to various reasons. The byelections have been put off by 15 days, she added in a statement.

The SEC said it had received a plea from the State Chief Secretary and the Deputy Commissioners of a few districts that sought postponement of the polls in view of law and order and other issues. Hence, the byelections had been put off 15 days, said a communique signed by the State Election Commission on Monday.

The postponement of the byelections to the five Gram Panchayat seats in Chamarajanagar comes in the wake of the Model Code of Conduct clashing with the Cabinet meeting scheduled to be held atop MM Hills on Thursday.

According to the calendar of events of the May 11 bypolls, the code would have kicked in from April 22 and remained in force till May 14. The GP seats for which byelections were scheduled included a seat in MM Hills Gram Panchayat, where the Cabinet meeting was scheduled.

The Deputy Commissioner of Chamarajanagar had written to the SEC seeking a clarification on the matter.

The SEC has now put off the elections by 15 days, clearing the confusion.
