North Chennai is expected to see significant civic improvements, according to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), as the Regional Deputy Commissioner (North) recently outlined plans for infrastructure upgrades.

Some of them include measures to prevent the entry of sewage into Captain Cotton Canal, cleanliness measures such as mass cleaning drive, and initiatives for ensuring public safety.

Mass cleaning

Mass cleaning was carried out in low-income group tenement areas under the Tiruvottiyur Zone, Manali Zone, Madhavaram Zone, Tondiarpet Zone, and Royapuram Zone, where 79.25 tonnes of garbage and 189.48 tonnes of debris was cleared recently.

The highest volume of garbage cleared was in Tondiarpet Zone (42.88 tonnes), while Tiruvottiyur Zone accounted for the most debris removal (156.82 tonnes), according to data from the GCC.

A total of 528 workers and 158 machinery units were deployed across 38 slum tenements, 4,098 blocks, and 44,956 households for the drive.

Improvements

The RDC, during his recent visit to Vyasarpadi and Kodungaiyur areas near the dump yard, had taken note of the illegal discharge of sewage and wastewater into the Captain Cotton Canal. The concerned authorities from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewage Board (CMWSSB) were told to address the issue, sources said.

Mosquito fogging would now be conducted twice a week. Additionally, silt and dead lotus leaves would be removed from the canal regularly to ensure better water flow. At Samathi Poo Colony playground in Ward 46, faulty lights would be repaired, they said.

“Green cover restoration, park light repairs, and maintenance of the fountain are being planned. A watchman will be appointed at a park in the colony,” an official said, adding that sanitary napkins would be provided in public toilets in Gandhipuram.
