In two separate incidents, a fisherman was found dead, while another was reported missing after venturing into the sea off the Nagapattinam coast. The Coastal Security Group police have launched investigations into both cases.

In the first incident, the body of a missing fisherman, Kannadasan, 57, from Akkaraipettai, was recovered from the sea near Nagapattinam. Kannadasan had gone fishing alone in his fiber boat on the night of March 16, but failed to return the following day. Concerned fishermen from Akkaraipettai initiated a search using five boats, but their efforts were in vain.

Following a complaint from the fishing community, the Coast Guard joined the search operation, deploying vessels to locate the missing fisherman. On March 18, local fishermen spotted a body floating to the east of Nagapattinam Port and informed the police. Upon retrieval, it was confirmed to be that of Kannadasan. The body was later sent to Nagapattinam Government Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

In a separate incident, another fisherman was reported missing after accidentally falling into the sea while fishing. According to reports, a mechanised fishing boat from Nagore set sail with 11 crew members from Akkaraipettai Fishing Harbour in the early hours of March 14.

While fishing approximately 200 nautical miles offshore on March 16, one of the crew members, S. Manickam ,52, from Nagore, reportedly slipped and fell overboard at midnight. Following the incident, the boat owner, Jegan, filed a complaint at the Nagapattinam Marine Police Station, reporting Manickam’s disappearance at sea.

Based on the complaint, the police registered a case for a missing person on March 18. A search operation has been launched to locate the missing fisherman, with authorities coordinating efforts with the local fishing community and rescue teams.
