For speedy implementation and monitoring of educational programmes and development projects, the Karnataka government has ordered the constitution of education reforms committees headed by an MLA at the taluk level.

The tahsildars of taluks, executive officers (EOs) of taluk panchayats, headmasters of primary schools and high schools with the highest enrollment in the taluk, the principal of government pre-university colleges with the highest enrolment in the taluk, a senior lecturer of the District Institute of Educational Training (DIETs) and two members from School Development and Monitoring Committees (SDMCs) of primary and high schools are the members. The Block Education Officers (BEOs) of the taluk will be the member-secretary of the committee.

In addition, the government will nominate five members, including a member each from among graduates, Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) communities, other backward classes, women, and general category.

This committee will monitor the important aspects of the education sector at the taluk level such as student enrolment, attendance, learning, and proper utilisation of human resources.

Functions of the committee include improving the quality of education by increasing school enrolment of all eligible children in the taluk and continuous monitoring of attendance of enrolled children and their learning. They should also work towards reducing the school dropout rate and helping the educational sector of the taluk through community participation in the development of government schools and corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes.
