The two-day 27th Dakshina Kannada Sahitya Sammelana which concluded at Mangalore University on Saturday passed a resolution urging the State government to fill up sanctioned vacant posts of teachers at government and government-aided private schools in the State.

The resolution stated that about 70,000 such posts were vacant in the State as the government has not made recruitments after the many teachers retired. It added that recruiting teachers will help students.

This was among the five resolutions passed at the sammelana presided over by senior writer Prabhakara Shishila.

The second resolution said that many government-aided private schools had been closed down in the State for not recruiting teachers against the vacant posts. Students are now seeking admission in private English-medium schools due to lack of teachers in the government and aided schools.

The sammelana, in its third resolution, said that teachers are stressed and overloaded with works related to Akshara Dasoha and Prathibha Karanji. They are not getting time for teaching. This has impacted the standard of education. The government should compulsorily appoint a clerk in all government and aided primary schools to engage in those activities.

Kannada out of degree courses

The fourth resolution of the sammelana condemned that the Deemed to be Universities are dropping Kannada and Kannada optional subjects from their syllabi in degree colleges. The government should make it compulsory that Kannada should be taught in four semesters in undergraduate courses.

Many deemed to be universities have reduced Kannada teaching from four to two semesters.

The sammelana in its fifth resolution urged the government to ensure that Kannada optional subject is compulsorily taught in all colleges under the universities in the State.
