The Basava Kendra of Gokul Road in Hubballi will hold a series of discourses on various 12th century Sharanas as part of the birth anniversary celebrations of social reformer and cultural icon of the State Basavanna (Basaveshwara) starting Sunday.

Addressing presspersons along with other office-bearers, Basava Kendra president G.B. Halyal said that the discourses on various Sharanas will be held at Basava Samskruti School at Morarji Nagar in Hubballi till April 30.

He said that the kendra has collaborated with various community organisations to organise talks on 12th century Sharanas (Vachanakaras) Jedara Dasimayya, Madivala Machideva, Nuliya Chandayya, Hadapad Appanna, Dohara Kakkayya, Gollalesha, Ambigara Chowdayya, Havinala Kallayya and Medara Ketayya.

Along with discourses, birth anniversary celebrations of the respective Sharanas will also be held simultaneously, he said.

The former chairman of Dharwad Milk Union Neelakanth Asuti will inaugurate the event at 5 p.m. on Sunday during which, medical professional Avinash Kavi will make a presentation on Kalyana Kranti (revolution).

Mayor Ramanna Badiger, noted chartered accountants Suresh Chenni and Channaveer Mungarwadi will be felicitated on the occasion.

President of the women’s wing of the kendra Sneha Bhusanur said that the initiative is aimed at bringing the followers of all Lingayat sub-sects on a common platform and also, promoting bonhomie among the followers.

Kendra secretary Prakash Munnoli said that on the day of Basava Jayanti on April 30, a colourful procession carrying the portraits of all the Sharanas and bundles of Vachanas will be taken out from Arjun Vihar to the Basava Kendra at Morarji Nagar at 4 p.m. This will be flagged off by the president of the Dharwad district unit of the Jagatika Lingayat Mahasabha.
