Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, who lost his life in a tragic car accident in Spain earlier this month, has been inducted into Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Hall of Fame as a tribute. Jota, who was contracted with Liverpool at the time of his death, was with his brother Andre Silva (25) when they met with a car accident in the wee hours on July 3. 

“Diogo was not only a phenomenal footballer, but someone who carried himself with humility and kindness throughout his time at Wolves, and will be sorely missed by all of us,” Wolves’ director of football administration Matt Wild said in a statement late on Thursday.

Billy Wright, Derek Dougan and Steve Bull are among those already inducted in the club’s Hall of Fame, which was established in 2008. Jota srarted his senior club career with local club PaCos de Ferreira before signing for Atletico de Madrid in La Liga. 

He moved to Porto for a year on loan before shifting base to Wolverhampton Wanderers in July 2017 on an one-year loan with an option of signing permanently. The Portuguese forward was instrumental in securing themselves a Premier League promotion in the 2017-18 season, following which the club offered Jota a permanent deal. 

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ plans for Jota tribute  

Jota played 131 matches for Wolverhampton Wanderers, scoring 44 goals before joining Liverpool in 2020. The English club have also planned a tribute for Jota and Silva during their final pre-season game against Celta Vigo on August 9. 

Wolverhampton Wanderers will also commemorate the passing of Jota in their opening game of the Premier League 2025-26 season against Manchester City on August 16.
