The rift between the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] is deepening in the Kollam Corporation as three standing committee chairpersons, including the Deputy Mayor, submitted their resignations on Wednesday evening.

There was an agreement between the CPI and the CPI(M) regarding the exchange of positions in local bodies. According to this, the last one year of the Mayor’s post in the Corporation belongs to the CPI and the incumbentMayor Prasanna Ernest was expected to step down on Wednesday.

Irked by the CPI(M)‘s unwillingness to hand over the post even after the term has expired, Deputy Mayor and finance standing committee chairperson Kollam Madhu, education standing committee chairperson Savitha Devi and PWD standing committee chairperson Sajeev Soman resigned from their posts. They will now continue as councillors.

As per reports, Ms. Ernest may continue as the Mayor till the CPI(M) State conference scheduled to be held in Kollam from March 6 to 9. “It was a party decision to submit the resignations of the CPI standing committee chairpersons as the Mayor did not step down on Wednesday. We will be part of the council,” said Mr. Madhu.
