The CPI has alleged a deep link between the rise in liquor sales and unchecked flow of drugs and spurt in criminal activities in Puducherry.

CPI secretary A.M. Saleem said in a statement that liquor consumption and intake of drugs like cannabis was not only degrading the youth but also increasing their involvement in illegal acts, including robbery, chain snatching and extortion. In the most recent case, three youths were hacked to death by a rival gang, he said.

The CPI leader alleged that laxity on the part of the police was resulting in a recent rise in a host of crimes.

He also claimed that political protection was thwarting police department from taking appropriate action.

Mr. Saleem said it was surprising that despite the presence of a large number of police officers and policemen in the state of Puducherry, the administration was unable to maintain law and order. In the absence of regular police patrolling, anti-social elements were emboldened to roam the streets freely during the night, he said.

He urged the Police Department to work proactively, carry out sustained patrolling and keep a close tab on criminal elements.
