A Delhi court on Thursday dismissed a defamation complaint filed by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Satyendar Jain against Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Bansuri Swaraj.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Neha Mittal of the Rouse Avenue Court dismissed the complaint and said that there does not exist sufficient grounds for taking cognisance of the offence punishable under Section 356 of the BNS. “No other offence appears to be made out from the complaint and documents annexed therewith. Accordingly, cognisance in the present case is declined,” the court noted.

Mr. Jain, who is a three-time MLA and a former Minister in the Delhi government, in his criminal defamation complaint, had alleged that Ms. Swaraj made defamatory remarks against him during a television interview which was aired on October 5, 2023. He said that in the interview, which was watched by “millions”, the BJP MP had falsely claimed that ₹3 crore in cash, 1.8 kg of gold and 133 gold coins were recovered from his house. He added that the remarks were made to gain undue political advantage and has impacted his image in public.
