In a powerful strideagainst the growing challenge of drug abuse, a ‘Coastal Cyclothon’ was held on Sunday under the aegis of Thrissur district administration and the district Excise Vimukthi Mission, in collaboration with Cyclers Thrissur. District Collector Arjun Pandian flagged off and participated in the ride themed “Sports is the Intoxicant” (Sports Aanu Lahari).

The cyclothon kicked off at 8 a.m. from Punnayurkulam and covered 80-km through Vadanappally, Snehatheeram, Valapad, Perinjanam, and S.N. Puram, covering both National Highway and Coastal Highway, before concluding at the historic Kottapuram Muziris Park at 2.30 p.m.

With 50 enthusiastic cyclists, including the District Collector himself, the event showcased a powerful message of resilience and hope. The team received a warm welcome at Perinjanam from MLA E.T. Taison and Perinjanam panchayat president Vineetha Mohandas, along with other local leaders. The reception at S.N. Puram panchayat was led by president M.S. Mohanan and members of the S.N. Cyclers Group.

At the grand finishing line in Kottapuram Muziris Park, the cyclists were greeted by V.R. Sunil Kumar, MLA, Kodungallur Municipal chairperson T.K. Geetha, councillors, and members of the Muziris Cyclers Group, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

The cyclothon wasn’t just a ride — it was a bold statement. “The goal was to spread the message of a drug-free Thrissur and create awareness about the dangers of substance abuse, turning ordinary citizens into socially responsible individuals,” said Mr. Pandiaan, who led the initiative with passion.

Many prominent figures, including Thrissur Vimukthi Mission manager P.K. Satheesh; Excise circle inspector of Vadanappally Benny George, and other excise officials, local body leaders, and others, were present to support this campaign.
