The Greater Chennai Corporation’s (GCC) bridges department has said it would address the deteriorating condition of the Gengu Reddy subway, following complaints from motorists and pedestrians. The problems highlighted included water leakage at many spots on the walls and sidewalks of the subway, eroded tar and concrete, and numerous potholes, particularly on the northern section, away from the Poonamallee High Road.
Srinivasa Raghavan V., a commuter and member of Voice of Perambur, said: “Tar and concrete had eroded on both sides of the subway, and they pose a danger. Water is leaking from many spots on the walls and moss-covered sidewalks. There are many potholes on the other side, away from the Poonamallee High Road, and water stagnation has worsened issues. Small potholes remain unattended due to the negligence of officials. Moreover, constant department official transfers has created more issues.”
Complaints about rainwater pooling in the subway from a hole in the wall has made the pavement slippery, with soggy mud and garbage strewn around. “The subway lighting is inadequate, and dimly lit pathways are not safe, especially during the rains,” he added.
‘Increased groundwater levels’
In response to these complaints, the civic body’s bridges department stated that inspections commenced this week to assess and address the seepage caused by increased groundwater levels.
A department official stated: “Inspections with regard to this started this week. Due to an increase in groundwater, there is seepage. The same is also observed at Nungambakkam subway. Estimates are being readied for the process of laying a waterproofing sheet and concrete to arrest the seepage.”
The official also said that ‘grouting’, a method to seal walls, would be used to fix the leaks.
