The Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) has cracked down on electricity thefts in areas under its jurisdiction and has imposed fines exceeding ₹6 crore so far during 2024-25.

CESC Vigilance Executive Engineer C. Umesh and Deputy Superintendent of Police Anandamurthy, said in a release that that the CESC vigilance squad has taken strict action against those involved in drawing illegal electricity connections.

The authorities said that its field staff and officials, helped by the Vigilance Squad Superintendent of Police Savitha Hoogar, conducted operations across Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Mandya, Kodagu, and Hassan districts and cases were registered against individuals involved in power theft and misuse of electricity.

During the 2024-25 financial year, the vigilance squad inspected 5,716 establishments, including residential, commercial, industrial, and temporary setups, said the release.

As a result, 1,312 cases of electricity theft and misuse were registered, leading to fines totaling to ₹6,36,72,607. This is in addition to the recovery of ₹5,94,89,898 in fines which were pending, according to the CESC.

The authorities also inspected 23,014 metres installed across different sectors, and on identifying non-cognisable offenses in certain cases, imposed fines.

Mr. Umesh and Mr. Anandmurthy said that electricity theft is a criminal offense under the law and legal action would be initiated against offenders. They also urged the general public to report or inform any cases pertaining to electricity theft, and said that informants’ identities will be kept confidential.
