Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said the national capital can become an “ideal capital” only through mutual cooperation between the Centre, Delhi government, and city police and that the three will meet once a month.

Mr. Shah made the statement while chairing a review meeting on the city’s law and order situation, which was attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and senior officials of the Home Ministry, Delhi government, and police.

The Minister expressed hope that the “double-engine government of Delhi will work with double speed for a developed and safe Delhi as per the expectations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi”.

Mr. Shah directed the Delhi police to take strict action against the “entire network that helps Bangladeshi and Rohingya intruders enter the country, get documents made, and facilitates their stay here”.

He said the issue of illegal intruders should be dealt with strictly as it is related to national security and that they should be “identified and deported”.

Mr. Shah emphasised that strict action should be taken against police stations and sub-divisions that fail to perform. He said it is important to know the level of satisfaction of the people about Delhi police’s initiatives through third-party surveys.

The Minister stressed that it should be the priority of the police to eliminate inter-State gangs in Delhi with a “ruthless approach”. He said there is a need to work with a ‘top to bottom’ and ‘bottom to top’ approach in dealing with narcotics cases and dismantling its network.

‘Police nod not needed’

Mr. Shah also made it clear that the permission of Delhi Police will not be required in matters related to construction in the city.

The Minister directed that 25 security committees be formed on a pilot basis in JJ clusters. He said the Delhi government should appoint special prosecutors for quick disposal of 2020 Delhi riots cases.

100% security: CM

Addressing mediapersons after the review meeting, Ms. Gupta said, “The double-engine government will work to address Delhi’s issues the same way it is working in other States. All issues that require coordination will be dealt with. Delhi will be given 100% security. We will have monthly review meetings to ensure this.”
