The Madurai district police have booked six persons, including juveniles, on charges of assaulting a Scheduled Caste (SC) boy and forcing him to fall on their feet on January 16, over a quarrel a few months ago, near Usilampatti.
Madurai Superintendent of Police, B.K. Arvind, said two persons were picked up for inquiry after the Usilampatti Town police registered a case of assault and abuse and under the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
A few months ago, the SC boy from Sangampatti near Chellampatti and the suspects, who are caste Hindus, reportedly quarrelled with each other during a temple festival. After the incident, the boy had gone to Madurai with his father for work and had returned home for the Pongal festival.
On January 16, the suspects allegedly beat him up at the Sangampatti irrigation tank.
Based on the boy’s complaint lodged on January 17, the Usilampatti Town police registered the case the next day.
