Two persons, including a Class 3 student and a college student, drowned in rivers near Thanjavur on Sunday.

In the first case, Jana, 7, son of Marimuthu of Sozhagampatti, went with his elder brother Deva ,11, to a salon. While Deva was inside, Jana went to bathe in the Kallanai canal at Maraneri, where he drowned. Locals rescued him and rushed him to the Maraneri Primary Health Centre, where doctors declared him brought dead. Puthalur police have registered a case and are investigating.

In the second incident, Saran, 20, son of Aaryan of Sembarai in Tiruchi district and a second-year student of a private college, was bathing with six friends in the Cauvery near Thirukattupalli regulator. When one of his friends began to drown, Saran tried to rescue him but was pulled by the current. While the friend was saved by others, Saran was brought out of the water and taken to the Thirukattupalli Government Hospital where he was declared dead. Thirukattupalli police have registered a case.
