A war of words erupted between rival student groups on Sunday, days after the Election Committee (EC) of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) put on hold the students’ union polls following an alleged attack on EC members.
The Left-affiliated student groups accused the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) of creating a ruckus, while the ABVP accused the EC of working in favour of the Left-affiliated groups.
The outgoing Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU), which is a coalition of Left-affiliated groups, appealed to the student community to show full faith in the EC and ensure the safety of all its members. “It is our responsibility to ensure the safety of the EC members. We appeal to the students community to stand against the attack on the EC members by the ABVP,” the JNUSU said in a statement.
The ABVP demanded that the EC be reconstituted to include “neutral, non-political, and unbiased” members who can ensure a transparent election process.
