As part of the Great Backyard Bird Count, a community science project in ornithology supported by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society, which is held annually in February, a series of bird walks for children will be held in eight Indian cities on February 15 and 16. The walks, which will be held in Bengaluru, Dimapur, Halol, Jaipur, Mangaluru, Ranchi, Trivandrum, and Ujjain, are being organised by Early Bird and Ataavi Bird Foundation in partnership with other organisations, including the Coastal Karnataka Bird Watchers Network (CKBWN), Ecowarriors Nagaland, Keystone Foundation and Prakriti, among others.
According to a release, these walks will be led by experienced nature educators, offering a unique opportunity for young children to explore the joy of bird-watching in their cities. Any child in these cities, between the ages of 9 and 13 years can participate in these walks that are “designed to give children a deeper understanding of birds beyond mere identification. By exploring bird habitats and behaviours and engaging in fun activities, children will develop a holistic appreciation for birds.”
