The death toll in the under construction six-storey building collapse in Bhadrachalam town rose to two on Friday, with rescuers recovering the body of another mason after nearly 33 hours of multi-agency rescue operation.

The body of P. Upender, 40, was retrieved from the rubble of the collapsed ‘unauthorised’ structure by rescuers at around 2 a.m.

The building collapse incident triggered widespread outrage among the denizens of the temple town prompting demands for stern action against the owner of the building for ‘illegal’ construction ‘undermining’ public safety.

Meanwhile, members of the CITU-affiliated Telangana Building & Other Construction Workers’ Union took out a protest rally in Bhadrachalam on Friday demanding justice to the bereaved families of the deceased masons.

They demanded that the government pay ₹1 crore ex gratia each to the kin of the deceased, and provide government jobs to one member of their families. The demonstrators sought deterrent action against the owner of the collapsed building to prevent recurrence of such ‘man-made’ tragedies.
