The Institute of Social Paediatrics (ISP) at Government Stanley Hospital held an event to spread awareness on early detection of autism spectrum disorder and its treatment. April 2 is annually observed as autism awareness day. A total of 325 children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and high risk features for ASD, who are registered at the district early intervention centre, have been undergoing various therapies at the ISP for the past 2 years. So far, 5,785 sessions have been conducted, hospital authorities said.

“Autism children benefit from speech therapy for their communications skills, specialised sensory integration therapy for sensory issues, and occupational therapy for fine motor skills. “Children who come regularly for therapy show improvement,” said J. Ganesh, director-in-charge, ISP.

Parents shared their experiences. Doctors at the hospital reiterated that identifying the condition within two years of age, and providing intervention consistently would result in steady improvement.

Senior officials of the hospital also participated in the event.
