The High Court-appointed Special Investigation Team(SIT) that probed the case pertaining to sexual assault of a student on the Anna University campus has named history-sheeter Gnanasekar as the only accused in the crime. The charge sheet filed recently by the SIT ruled out the involvement of any other person in the crime.

It may be recalled that the Greater Chennai City Police Commissioner A. Arun had said during the press conference held after the incident that the man, who had been arrested for crime, had acted alone, and no one else was involved in the case. Information about the contents of the charge sheet were gathered from police sources.

According to the report, the incident took place when the victim, a 19-year-old female student, and her boyfriend were on the university campus. D. Gnanasekar, 37, who had been residing with his family in Kottur, was running biryani outlet ‘Gravity Biryani’ on the service road near Adyar Bridge. He had already been involved in several crimes.

On December 23, at 7.10 p.m. he entered Anna University campus in Kotturpuram. He set his mobile phone on ‘flight mode’ to ensure that there was no evidence or trail of his presence on the campus. He hid his face by wearing a cap, and as he entered the campus, he pretended as if he was talking over the phone.

At 7.45 p.m., Gnanasekar spotted the victim and her friend who were sitting alone on the stairs of the building. First he hit the friend on the head and snatched the victim’s college identity card. Then he threatened to show a video that he had shot of the victim and her friend to the dean, warden and staff. They pleaded with him to let them go. Then he told the victim that he would save her and asked her to stay in the same place and took her friend away. A few minutes later, he came and told her that her friend was caught by the staff. He said he would, however, protect her and asked her to put her mobile phone on flight mode.

The he took her to a secluded place and began to sexually assault her, shooting a video of the incident.

He wanted to give her the impression that he was an official of the university and pretended to be talking to someone over phone saying, ”Sir I would let her go after a warning.”

He collected her parents’ phone numbers and left the place after telling her that she he would expect her to come whenever he called her. He had saved the video in a hidden folder. When Kotturpuram police summoned him, he deleted it, the report said.

A senior police officer said, “The team analysed the call records of the mobile phone used by the accused. He merely pretended to be talking to somebody, calling him ‘sir’ over the phone to threaten the girl. Actually there was no one on the other side. His mobile phone was on flight mode from the time of entry into the campus until he left by his bike .”

Gnanasekar was charged under Sections 331(6) (Lurking trespass by night) 126(2) (wrongfully restraining any person), 140(4) (kidnapping in order to subject a person to grievous hurt, 75(2)(sexual harassment) read with 64(1)(Rape) among other provisions of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Information Technology Act and Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of woman Act.
