Ahead of summer, commuters in many places, including commercial stretches wait for proper bus shelters

Chennai Corporation has not constructed bus shelters in many roads that have become crowded owing to commercial development.

AIADMK councillor J.John said commuters have been demanding bus shelters near Padi Britannia bus stop and near Gandhi Statue. “The officials have been delaying the construction of the bus shelter for many years, claiming that the road will be widened. Commuters are waiting in the sun. During the rain the situation is worse. Ambattur zone residents want bus shelters,” he said.

DMK councillor G.V.Nagavalli said commuters need a large bus shelter near Saravana Stores on CTH Road. “As the area near Padi flyover has been developing as a commercial neighbourhood, commuters have been crowding the road near Saravana Stores on CTH Road without adequate shelters. The old shelter is small. I have planned to construct a bus shelter using councillor’s ward development fund. We need to construct a bus shelter before summer. We have received NoC from the highways,” she said.

MDMK councillor S.Jeevan said three out of six bus stops in his ward in north Chennai did not have proper bus shelters. “The bus stop opposite Amma canteen in Erukkancheri does not have a bus shelter. Over 350 to 400 commuters visit the bus stop during rush hour. As the Chennai Corporation has not constructed a bus shelter, I have planned to utilise councillor’s ward development fund 2025-2026 for the new bus shelter. I am worried about the delay in implementation of work under the councillor’s ward development scheme. The work on last year’s proposal under the councillor’s ward development fund has not started yet. Two bus shelters in my ward have to be repaired,” he said.

Velachery resident S.Kumararaja said the bus shelters in Bharathi Nagar, Taramani Road and Bypass Road opposite GRT are in a bad shape. “Commuters need better bus shelters. We need information about the time, bus route, first bus and the last bus in the bus stop. But the GCC is utilising space in bus shelters for advertisement, including government advertisements and private advertisements,” he charged.
