A 56-year-old activist opposing illegal stone quarrying in the Thirumayam area of Pudukkottai district died in a road accident on Friday.

The deceased, Jaffer Ali, a resident of Vengalur and a local AIADMK functionary, was reportedly hit by a lorry while riding his two-wheeler in Vengalur. He died on the spot. The Thirumayam police have registered a case and are investigating.

Jaffer Ali has been raising concern against alleged mining violations in the Thirumayam region and petitioning the authorities.
