Chief Minister Rekha Gupta directed the Education Department officials on Tuesday to issue notices to the schools that have increased the fees illegally.
The Opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been attacking the Delhi government over a steep and “unauthorised” hike in the fees of private schools while the BJP has held AAP responsible for the fee hikes, accusing it of not conducting audits of private schools during its 10-year tenure.
During an interaction with students on Tuesday, the CM said she received a complaint about a school in north Delhi “increasing fees” and “expelling students”. In a video posted on her X handle, Ms. Gupta could be heard directing officials to “cancel the school’s registration”.
Stating that the government has a “zero-tolerance policy” for unregulated school fee hikes, the CM said, “No school has the right to harass students or their guardians, or to increase fees arbitrarily.”
In response, Leader of the Opposition Atishi, in a post on X, challenged the Chief Minister “to issue an order today to stop the increased fees of all schools with immediate effect”.
She claimed, “If Rekha Guptaji has a nexus with the private schools, the order will not be issued.”
