The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday hit out at Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta over Delhi Law Minister Kapil Mishra’s continued presence in the Cabinet despite a court ordering an FIR against him in connection with the 2020 communal riots in north-east Delhi.
“The country saw how Kapil Mishra incited the riots in which 53 people lost their lives. Today, all those who have been booked in connection with the riots are in jail. Then, why’s Delhi Police not arresting him? Why is the CM not removing him from the Cabinet,” Leader of the Opposition Atishi asked in the Assembly.
A day earlier, a city court had asked the police to register an FIR against Mr. Mishra and probe his alleged involvement in the north-east Delhi riots.
The police had not booked the Karawal Nagar MLA at the time of going to press.
Around 2 p.m., AAP members, holding placards, marched towards the well of the House and raised slogans against the BJP government and the Minister. As the ruckus continued, Speaker Vijender Gupta ordered 12 AAP members, including the LoP, to be marshalled out. The Opposition MLAs later assembled near Mahatma Gandhi’s statue on the Assembly premises and said their protest would continue till Mr. Mishra tenders his resignation.
Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav said, “A fair probe is impossible until Mr. Mishra remains in the Cabinet.”
The CPI(M) issued a statement urging the police to “shed their complicity” and probe the role of the Minister “and other leaders of the BJP and the RSS in the riots”.
When reached for comment, the BJP and Mr. Mishra did not respond.
