Civil supplies CID seized 6,500 kg Public Distribution System (PDS) rice hidden in hay in a lorry at Karaikudi on Tuesday. 

According to police, based on a tip-off that PDS rice was being smuggled from Sivaganga and Pudukkottai to a private rice processing units at Pallathur near Karaikudi, police personnel, along with civil supplies CID personnel, checked a lorry transporting hay.  

While inspecting the lorry, they found 130 bags of PDS rice weighing about 6,500 kg hidden inside the hay.  

After seizing the lorry, police arrested driver Palanivelu, 43, of Kottaiyur and Karunanidhi, 45, of Sivaganga.
