The police seized 390 kg of gutkha from an SUV in Vayalur near Vriddhachalam on Saturday night.

Following a tip-off, a team was conducting vehicle checks at Vayalur when they noticed an SUV and told the driver to stop. But the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the spot.

On inspecting the vehicle, the police found 390 kg of banned gutkha and tobacco products valued at ₹5.85 lakh.

The police said the consignment was being transported to various parts of Cuddalore district for sale.

The police have launched a search for the car driver.

A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
