33 arrested in police crackdown on illegal liquor sales during Pongal in Mayiladuthurai

In a crackdown on illegal liquor sales across Mayiladuthurai district during Pongal festivities, the teams from the Prohibition Enforcement Wing and local police stations registered 28 cases and arrested 33 persons. The police also seized 1,489 litres of liquor and two two-wheelers allegedly used to commit the crime.

In 2024, 3,547 cases of illegal liquor sales and smuggling were registered in the district, leading to the arrest of 3,603 individuals. The police officials confiscated 74,975 litres of various types of liquor, along with 41 two-wheelers and eight four-wheelers involved in these offences. Additionally, 12 persons were take into preventive detention under the Goondas Act.
