270 POCSO cases registered in 2024 in Erode district

The district police registered 270 cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, and arrested all the accused in 2024.

In its annual report, the police said that 15 accused in these cases were detained under the Goondas Act. Additionally, in four cases, three accused were convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment, and one was sentenced to seven years imprisonment. The release said to prevent crimes against women and children, the police conducted 6,444 awareness meetings in educational institutions and villages. Furthermore, 12,910 people downloaded the police assistance app, the release added.

Detailing crime statistics, the release reported 28 murders occurred in 2024, compared to 33 murders in 2023. Of these, seven murders were attributed to family disputes, and 49 accused involved in these cases were arrested. In total, 378 crime cases were reported, leading to the arrest of 517 accused. Stolen properties, including 102 vehicles, and 844 sovereign gold jewellery, all worth ₹2.98 crore were recovered, with 80% of the stolen items returned to the rightful owners.

Among the 78 heinous crime cases, 77 were solved and 158 accused were arrested. Recovered items included seven vehicles, 621 sovereign gold jewellery, valued at ₹1.87 crore. Additionally, of the 408 normal crime cases, 329 cases were detected, with recoverines including 95 vehicles and 223 sovereign gold jewellery, all worth ₹1.11 crore.

Regarding road rule violations in 2024, a total of 1,76,940 cases were registered and fines amounting to ₹5.11 crore were collected. The police recommended the cancellation of 11,637 driving licenses, of which 9,874 licenses were cancelled or revoked. Furthermore, 55 persons were detained under the Goondas Act in 2024, compared to 33 in 2023, the release added.
