A total of 27 students from schools run by Coimbatore Corporation have qualified for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) scheme.

The NMMS is implemented for Class VIII students studying in government and government-aided schools. The scheme is aimed at supporting meritorious students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. To be eligible, a student’s annual family income must not exceed ₹1.5 lakh, and the student must have secured a minimum of 55% marks in the annual examination of Class VII.

Students who pass the NMMS exam receive a scholarship of ₹1,000 a month. The financial assistance is directly credited to the students’ bank accounts from Class IX up to Class XII, totalling ₹48,000 over four years.

Among the 27 students, Varsha, a student from the Corporation Middle School in Masakalipalayam, secured the top rank in the district and ranked 38th at the State level, bringing recognition to the school and the Corporation. Across Coimbatore district, a total of 229 students have cleared the NMMS examination this year.
