Kanniyakumari Collector announces measures to control noise pollution

In the wake of continuous complaints by the public, Collector R. Alagumeena has announced regulations regarding the use of high-powered speakers during festivals, celebrations and religious places to control the noise pollution.

The Collector chaired a meeting on Monday, where she discussed the guidelines for using speakers during celebrations, festivals and vehicle horns, officials said.

Ms. Alagumeena urged the transport officials to ensure that the vehicles are not using air horns and multi-tone horns. She directed them to frequently inspect the vehicles that create noise while in motion, causing disruptions to the public.

“The regional transport officer must regularly monitor the noise level in the vehicles to ensure they do not exceed ambient air quality standards and noise pollution. Any violation should result in strict action against the drivers as per the rules,” she emphasised.

She instructed the regional transport officials to install “no-horn” sign boards at the places of peace zones.

The Collector directed police officials to make sure that the banned cone speakers are not used on any occasion and only the only approved speakers are used during celebrations and festivals.

The police are also tasked with verifying the noise level of any loudspeaker or other sound generating device used does not exceed the ambient noise level of an area more than 10 decibel. Also the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board was instructed to monitor the noise generated by the factories remains within permissible limits.

SP R. Stalin and officials from other departments were present at the meeting.
