Concern over construction and demolition waste mismanagement, illegal dumping, and encroachments were raised at the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Council meeting.
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) had introduced new guidelines for the management of construction and demolition (C&D) waste and categorised waste generators as micro, small, and bulk under this, which took effect on April 21, 2025.
G. Shanthakumari, Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Public Health, said that recently, many complaints had surfaced regarding management of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. The private company roped in for management does clear the waste, but in some areas, the responsibility was transferred and waste was dumped at undesignated spots or below bridges.
Perungudi Zone (XIV) Ward Committee Chairman S.V. Ravichandran said fencing needed to be put up around the Pallikaranai marshland as many dump C&D waste close to it, and encroachments also crop up often.
To this, Mayor R. Priya replied that a fence would be put up and closed-circuit television camera surveillance would be installed to ensure there was no illegal dumping of C&D waste.
