Boy undergoes liver transplant for rare inherited disorder

An eight-year-old boy with Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis Type 13 (PFIC13), a rare inherited liver disorder, underwent a liver transplant at a private hospital here.

A team of doctors at the Rainbow Children’s Hospital performed a living donor transplant on the boy hailing from Thoothukudi, with his mother donating a portion of her liver,

In addition to this, the team completed two paediatric liver transplants on infants— a seven-month-old from Puducherry with severe liver disease, and a five-month-old from West Bengal who was born with biliary atresia, a press release said.

The team was led by Mettu Srinivas Reddy, Lead Transplant Surgeon, and Somashekara, Senior Consultant Paediatric Hepatologist.

Team members included Prasanna Gopal, Transplant Surgeon; Karthik Narayanan and Nataraj Palaniappan, Senior Consultants in Paediatric Intensive Care; Keerthivasan, Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

They were assisted by Sathish Chander, who led the anaesthesiology department.

Dr. Somashekara pointed out that paediatric liver transplant was one of the most critical yet challenging areas in medicine, according to the hospital release.
