The All-Women Police, Avadi, on Friday arrested a youth from Pollachi for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor from Avadi.

Police sources said the 14-year-old girl was under the care of her grandparents. She became acquainted with Surya, 19, of Pollachi on social media. The duo interacted through chatting and video calls. She also shared personal photos with him on his insistence. Surya visited Avadi two days ago and met the girl at her residence. Despite her grandmother’s opposition, Surya took her for an outing.

A complaint was lodged with the Avadi police and, on the orders of Avadi City Police Commissioner K. Shankar, they swung into action. Meanwhile, her grandfather received an SMS about a room booking from a hotel in Tambaram. Realising, the youth had used his mobile number to book the room, he alerted the police. The police reached the lodge in Tambaram and rescued the girl.

The police arrested Surya on charges under Sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Further investigation is on.
