The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) of Southern Circle Bengaluru A.M. Chowdhary commenced a two-day statutory inspection of the newly constructed broad gauge railway line between Peralam and Karaikal, under the Tiruchi Railway Division limits on Tuesday.

Accompanied by the Chief Administrative Officer (Construction) Southern Railway Sushil Kumar Maurya, Divisional Railway Manager Tiruchi M.S. Anbalagan and senior officers from various departments of the Southern Railway headquarters Mr. Chowdhary started the mandatory exercise by inspecting the Peralam railway station. 

Subsequently, Mr. Chowdhary carried out a motor trolley inspection on the newly laid track from Peralam to Thirunallar (16.4 km). The inspection included a detailed review of the limited use subways, level crossing gates, track parameters, points and crossings, minor bridges, signalling system components, and other critical safety infrastructure along the stretch.

The inspection would continue on Saturday along the stretch from Thirunallar to Karaikal. The CRS would conclude the inspection by conducting a speed trial run travelling on board a special train from Karaikal to Peralam, a press release from the Tiruchi Railway Division said. 

The Southern Railway Construction Organisation had constructed the new BG line along with overhead electrification arrangements in the 23.5 km Peralam – Karaikal section. As part of the project, new station buildings, major and minor bridges besides limited use subways were constructed. 

A metre gauge line existed in the stretch earlier and train services were stopped on this section nearly four decades ago. The new BG line has paved the way for the resumption of rail services on the Karaikal – Peralam section after a long gap.
