Neelankarai police have solved the burglary at a software engineer’s house by arresting a Nepali couple employed as domestic aids for burgling over 60 sovereigns of gold jewellery and silver articles. 

Police said the complainant B. Mahesh Kumar, 60, resides with his family at LB Nagar. He engaged the Nepali couple – Ramesh Manasahi 22 and Binitha Shahi, 21 for security and other works at his house a month ago. On May 14 morning, Mahesh after locking the house, left for his native place Kauverypakkam, Ranipet district to worship the ancestral deity. On his return the same night, he found sixty sovereigns of gold jewellery, silver articles and Rs 50,000 were burgled after breaking open the locks of the house. 

The preliminary investigation revealed that the couple who were engaged as domestic aids had been involved in the burglary. A special team was deputed to Lucknow, Bengaluru and Indo-Nepal border villages. After analysing various inputs, police traced the couple to Shanthi colony, Anna Nagar and nabbed them on Tuesday morning when they were about to go to Central railway station to go to Nepal.

The investigation further revealed that several friends of the couple from Nepal had the habit of staying at bungalows and big houses in Tamil Nadu and other States and burgled them when the owners were away. The couple had obtained Aadhar cards. Suspecting that they would be caught if they immediately leave the city, the couple stayed back for five days in Anna Nagar, said police. Further investigation is on to trace others who were involved in the burglary.
