Visakhapatnam Diesel Loco Shed, the largest loco shed in India, popularly known as Waltair Diesel Loco Shed, completed 60 years of service to the nation on Friday, May 2.

Commissioned on May 2, 1965, the shed commenced its journey with a mere 13 imported WDM1 type ALCO locomotives. The shed has grown by leaps and bounds and has become the largest Diesel Loco Shed in Indian Railways with a fleet strength of 450 locos.

Right from its inception, the shed has been a major and important shed in the country feeding locos for the premier express services as well as the bread-earning freight services in the region, according to K. Saandeep, Senior Divisional Commerial Manager of Waltair Division.

A special function was organised at the Diesel Loco Shed on Friday to under the supervision of Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer (DLS) Rudra Ranjan Mishra, to commemorate the occasion. Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra participated as the chief guest.
