Sir Syed College row politically motivated: IUML Kannur district chief

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has accused Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] of politicising the Sir Syed College land controversy, alleging that attempts to blame the IUML are driven by ulterior motives.

IUML Kannur district president Abdul Kareem Cheleri said the issue related to a clerical error in legal documents concerning the change in name of the college was being unnecessarily prolonged for political gains.

“The CPI(M) and the Chief Minister are tyring to fish in troubled waters by portraying the League as land grabbers,” he said in a statement.

Mr. Cheleri clarified that the Cannanore District Muslim Educational Association (CDMEA), which runs the college, had already taken an executive decision to correct the error in the affidavit through legal channels.

“There is no ambiguity. The land is Waqf property. The issue will be resolved by rectifying the affidavit filed in court,” he said, adding that the League had always respected the Waqf status of the land and had no intention of violating it.
