In a bold move to rejuvenate barren lands and promote sustainable agriculture, the Sreenarayanapuram panchayat here has launched the ‘Tharishu-rahitha panchayat’ (no barren land) project, aiming to transform fallow land into thriving agricultural spaces. The initiative, implemented in collaboration with the Haritha Kerala Mission and the Kerala State Biodiversity Board, seeks to identify and cultivate unused lands across all 21 wards of the panchayat.
The project’s objective is to encourage both individual and group farming on lands suitable for cultivation. In addition to vegetable farming, the panchayat plans to introduce crops such as coconuts, tapioca, medicinal herbs, bananas, and indigenous fruits. Notably, fruit orchards will be established on lands managed by religious institutions, fostering community participation in green initiatives.
Sreenarayanapuram panchayat president M.S. Mohanan highlighted the challenges faced due to the high salinity levels from the nearby Kanoli Canal and the coastline, which have deterred many farmers. This has resulted in large tracts of land lying unused. “This project will help identify and efficiently utilise such lands,” he explained, adding that a dedicated organising committee has been formed to spearhead the initiative.
As part of promoting biodiversity, the panchayat will host a Mango Festival to spread awareness about indigenous fruit varieties. Additionally, efforts will be made to clean inland ponds and breed endangered fish species, emphasising water conservation and sustainable fisheries.
Milk production
In collaboration with the Dairy Development department, the panchayat will also launch the ‘Dairy Village Project’, aimed at boosting milk production. The project aligns with broader environmental goals, including carbon neutrality, by integrating climate-resilient practices and biodiversity conservation.
The project will unite various stakeholders — MGNREGS, Kudumbashree, farmer groups, schools, NGOs, and business associations — creating a vibrant ecosystem for sustainable development. This multifaceted approach not only seeks to combat climate change but also to ensure food security, economic resilience, and ecological balance.
