A search is on for a fisherman who went missing after falling into the sea while fishing off in Kodiyakkarai on Saturday.

Three fishermen had ventured into the sea on a fibreglass boat owned by Kumar of Kuttiyandiyur, Mayiladuthurai. Lakshmanan, 40, of Keela Mookkai near Sirkazhi, was fishing with P. Mahalingam, 55, and C. Santhosh, 48, when rough seas caused the boat to sway about 15 nautical miles east of Kodiyakkarai. Mr. Lakshmanan lost his balance and fell overboard.

Despite efforts, he could not be rescued. The other two returned to the shore on Saturday night and informed the authorities. A search operation was launched on Sunday, involving local fishermen and marine officials.
