Manipal Hospital, Vijayawada, successfully diagnosed and treated a rare case of Sjögren’s Syndrome affecting the brain. “The case highlights the importance of looking beyond infections when faced with unexplained brain-related symptoms, said the press statement, issued by the hospital on Friday.

Consultant Neurologist Dr Vamsi Chalasani of Manipal Hospital Vijayawada, said: “A 24-year-old man visited the hospital with fever and severe headache that lasted for four days. The patient was restless and had a stiff neck, but showed no signs of stroke or paralysis. Initial tests, including a brain MRI and a spinal fluid analysis, pointed towards meningitis, but no infection was detected..”

After a detailed discussion, interaction with the patient’s family members, blood tests revealed positive markers for Sjögren’s Syndrome. A small biopsy from his salivary glands confirmed the diagnosis..

“Many people think Sjögren’s Syndrome only affects the eyes and mouth, but it can also impact the brain, leading to serious complications. Early detection can prevent long-term damage,” said Dr. Chalasani.

Cluster Director, Sudhakar Kantipudi, Manipal Hospital Vijayawada, said: “By paying close attention to symptoms and acting quickly, we were able to give the young man a second chance.
