The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) presented a ₹1-lakh-crore budget for Delhi on Tuesday, nearly 50 days after it defeated the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and came to power in the national capital.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who also holds the Finance portfolio, allocated ₹5,100 crore to provide ₹2,500 monthly cash aid to women, ₹100 crore for 100 ‘Atal canteens’ where meals would be offered at ₹5, and ₹210 crore for a scheme through which 1 lakh pregnant women would get cash assistance of up to ₹21,000, fulfilling major promises the BJP made in the run-up to the February 5 election.
Ms. Gupta also attacked the previous AAP government for “looting and mismanaging” Delhi.
The principal Opposition party hit back, saying that the proportionate allocations for the education and health sectors under the BJP government had dropped compared to those made during AAP’s tenure.
Some of the other schemes the CM announced in her maiden budget speech were ₹2,144 crore for free health treatment up to ₹10 lakh under the Centre’s flagship healthcare insurance scheme PM-JAY and ₹5 crore for the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Stipend Scheme, through which Dalit students enrolled at the city’s Industrial Training Institutes, skill centres, and polytechnic colleges will get a monthly stipend of ₹1,000.
However, in her speech, Ms. Gupta did not allude to the party’s poll promise to provide cooking gas cylinders for ₹500 and free cylinders on Holi and Deepavali.
Similar to the budgets presented by the previous government, the budget presented in the Assembly on Tuesday also saw the education sector getting the highest share of funds, followed by the transport and the health sectors.
