A total of 108 illegal betting websites have been blocked, while 133 India-based platforms have been served notices to restrict access in Telangana. Geo-fencing technology has been implemented to prevent users in Telangana from accessing these platforms and over 42,000 awareness programmes were conducted by the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) in view of increasing online betting and gambling scams.

Following cases against actors and social media influencers promoting online betting platforms, the bureau issued a public advisory citing strict legal action against those found playing, promoting, or facilitating online gambling. Many of these betting websites operate from foreign jurisdictions, making it difficult for victims to recover lost funds or seek legal recourse, the bureau said.

According to the TGCSB, online betting apps often lure users with promises of easy money and high returns but ultimately result in the users losing money. Many platforms operate without legal approval, making withdrawals impossible, while influencers and fake testimonials on social media mislead users into gambling scams. The authorities have also highlighted that betting apps use tactics such as instant sign-ups and bonuses to keep users engaged and trapped in a cycle of gambling.

The TGCSB requested citizens to report any betting platforms through WhatsApp at 8712672222.
