Tthe Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) recently floated a tender for constructing a foot overbridge with lifts and stairs on Race Course Road, in order to provide a major relief to passengers at the MRTS station in Guindy.

The project will replace a British-era bridge that had pillars extremely close to the tracks on platform one, violating safety norms. Executed by GCC and the Southern Railway, the proposed project is part of the World Bank-funded Chennai City Partnership initiative.

The estimated cost for GCC’s portion is ₹9.86 crore. The bridge is expected to be completed in a year, according to officials. Commuters said that as of now, the Railways has erected only two pillars near the entrance on platform 1A, and that the work must be expedited.

This 12-metre-wide bridge will connect all five platforms of the station to its eastern entrance on Race Course Road, and the western entrance near the Metro station on G.S.T. Road.

According to the Corporation officials, thousands of local train passengers disembark at Guindy station each day and use the rear entrance to access the bus stand on Race Course Road.

The new bridge is expected to improve connectivity for pedestrians.
