Two people died and three others suffered injuries when a portion of an old building in front of the bus stand at Belur collapsed on Sunday.
Amaranath, 42, and Nazeer, 48, died as they were stuck in the rubble. Neelamma, Jyothi, and Shilpa suffered serious injuries in the incident. The 75-year-old building housed four shops, which have remained closed for the past few years. However, fruit and flower sellers had put up stalls in the precincts of the building.
The shopkeepers were stuck in the rubble as the front portion of the building collapsed.
MLA for Belur H.K. Suresh visited the spot and took the officers of Belur town municipal council to task for allowing the shops to be set up near the old building. He blamed the negligence of the officers for the mishap.
Senior officers visited the spot.
