All workers injured in the collapse of the temporary support structure of the portico under-construction of a building at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) on Thursday were reported to be stable and discharged from hospital.

According to UoH administration’s communication on Friday, two of the workers were administered first-aid at the campus health centre and the remaining nine workers were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency attention.

The clearing of the debris and emergency action was taken up by National Disaster Response Force, the local police, Fire and Central Public Works Department (CPWD).

The administration explained that the construction of the building was entrusted to Central Public Works Department (CPWD). It quoted them as saying: “While finishing the portico work, an accidental contact between the boom pump, used for transferring liquid concrete onto the slab, and the scaffolding resulted in the collapse of the support structure leading to the accident”.

As of Friday, the administration said the police have filed a suo motu FIR and took the site supervisor into custody for questioning. The university administration is also in the process of filing a separate complaint with the police, it said.

The UoH administration, officials said, has decided to constitute a committee by March 3 to investigate into the circumstances that led to the incident, conduct a safety audit of the building under construction and submit a report.

The committee will also review the quality and safety of all other buildings that are under construction on the campus and take necessary action to avoid such incidents on the campus, it added.

The CPWD was also asked to submit a detailed report on the incident, the corrective and preventive measures for all construction sites on the campus.
