A state-of-the-art Electronic Interlocking (EI) system has been commissioned at Kumbalam railway station in the Ernakulam-Alappuzha corridor.

The system has been commissioned by the Thiruvananthapuram Division as part of efforts to enhance railway safety and operational efficiency. This technological upgrade replaces the outdated relay-based mechanical signalling system, offering improved reliability, flexibility, and safer train operations. Thirty-three out of the sixty-eight block stations in the division have been upgraded to the advanced EI system, according to a release.

The salient features of the work include the provision of electronic interlocking, operation of signals through a visual display unit replacing the old knob-type panel, upgradation of mechanically operated points to electrically operated points, and replacement of all old signalling and telecom assets, says the release.
