Railways must take action
Recently a 77-year-old man met with a fatal accident at Tirunelveli railway junction. Owing to a glitch, the lift was not working and the man was not able to use the foot overbridge. Hence while crossing the railway tracks, a train being shunted into the platform in the reverse direction hit him. He might not have noticed it. Keeping an inoperative lift is of no use. In such a busy station, escalators should have been installed. If there is space constraint, part of the foot overbridge should have been modified as ramp with sturdy handrails. And barricades should be in place to prevent people from crossing the tracks. Empty rakes being shunted into the station should be piloted by track staff. The railways should make efforts to prevent such accidents inside the station.

Shift bus stop
Kanniyakumari – Nagercoil National Highway and Vattakottai-Agasteeswaram Roads converge at Kottaram junction. Kottaram bus stop is in front the post office, and is very close to this junction. When buses stop here, traffic congestion occurs. Hence, I request the authorities to shift the bus stop from the post office to the auto stand which is behind the junction.

Speeding trucks cause accidents
The Nagercoil – Kaliyakkavilai stretch of the National Highway has been witnessing a high number of accidents caused by overspeeding trucks that transport building materials to Kerala. Many lives have been lost in these accidents. To prevent the accidents, the police must make mandatory installation of speed governors in vehicles and deploy police interceptors to monitor the speed of the trucks.

No buses for girl students
A large number of girl students from surrounding villages study in the college and schools in Courtallam in Tenkasi district. In the absence of direct bus services, students from Mathalamparai and Kadayam and beyond are forced to travel to the college and schools in vans hired on a monthly basis. Those who cannot afford it, change two or three buses to reach their institution. So, I request the transport authorities to operate town bus services from Kadayam and Mathalamparai to Tenkasi old bus stand via Ayirapperi, Parasakthi College.

Save Nambiyar
The Nambiyar river near Valliyoor in Tirunelveli district has become a stagnant septic tank endangering the health of people. The river was once a source of drinking water and irrigation. Now stinking drainage water flows on the entire stretch of the river, along with garbage. The condition is deteriorating day by day. Now there is the threat of vector-borne diseases in this region. Experts from the PWD, NGOs and voluntary organisations must evolve a plan of action to restore the river to its pristine state.

Poor civic facilities
The condition of road in Saibaba Colony along Sivanthipatti Road in Tirunelveli is so bad that it resembles more of a cart track with ups and downs. This poses threat to two-wheeler riders during rain. Besides, a park inside LIC Colony remains uncared for with withered trees and weeds. I request the officials concerned pay a visit to this area and assess the civic conditions.

Frame guidelines for study tours
It gave much pain and sorrow to learn about the demise of three students on tour from a college in Nagercoil – all because of reckless driving by an omni bus driver. The Tamil Nadu government should make it mandatory for educational institutions to get permission from authorities for conducting study tours and frame guidelines to ensure a safe journey.

Expedite work
The phase III of underground drainage project in Tirunelveli is progressing at a snail’s pace. The irony is that the work that was stopped during lockdown resumed during monsoon season, causing much inconvenience to the residents. The corporation should expedite the work.
