Chennai Metro Rail will build a foot overbridge at the Poonamallee Bypass Metro station of corridor 4 that is part of the Phase II Project.
The corridor, which connects Poonamallee and Light House via T. Nagar, has 27 stations. Poonamallee Bypass is one of the stations that will be opened first as part of the Poonamallee-Porur stretch later this year. In a shift from the Phase I Project, where stations were had four entry/exit points, the ones in Phase II will only have two. But the Porur Bypass Metro will only have one entry/exit point as the Porur lake lies opposite the station. In the case of the Poonamallee Bypass Metro, the construction of one of the entry/exit points will be delayed due to land issues.
According to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials, the station construction is under way, and the work to build a foot overbridge will start in a couple of months as well. “This facility can be completed fairly quickly, and it will be ready before December 2025, when we plan to open the stretch. We have planned this facility because commuters will find it very difficult to use the station otherwise as they will have to cross the busy road,” an official said.
